CAPE TOWN CITY LEAVE IT LATE TO DELIVER AGAINST AMAZULU, GOES SECOND ON THE LOG

CAPE TOWN – Cape Town City needed an 84th minute winner to secure a 1-0 Absa Premiership win over AmaZulu at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

As it happened: Cape Town City v AmaZulu

The home side started off positively and had a couple of sniffs at goal early on through Sibusiso Masina, Craig Martin and Aubrey Ngoma, however some solid defending from the KwaZulu-Natal team meant there were no real chances.

AmaZulu could have gone in front in the first 27 minutes of the game when Siduduzo Dlamini beat the off-side trap, but his finish lacked conviction and goalkeeper Sage Stephens made an excellent block.

After Martin squandered an opening in front of goal with a heavy touch, Roland Putsche missed his side’s best chance of the half when he nodded over from 10-yards out, three minutes before half time.

There was still time for another chance for the Cape-side before half time as Victor Obinna fired a volley narrowly wide.

AmaZulu began the second half with purpose as Siyethemba Mnguni’s header drew a smart save from Stephens and then Michael Morton pulled his effort wide of the upright.

Rhulani Manzini also fired a shot wide of the mark as the visitors kept their momentum going.

City however came storming back in the final 10 minutes and after both Masina and Teko Modise hit the woodwork in succession, the winning goal arrived moments later when Putsche crashed the ball in from close range after Boalefa Pule failed to gather a cross.

This win sees Cape Town City move second on the Absa Premiership log.
