JOHANNESBURG – Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Peters-Nel has been crowned the new Miss Universe.
Nel-Peters becomes only the second South African to win the crown in nearly four decades.
Here are five things you may not have known about the universe’s hottest woman, officially:
1. She’s a self-defense trainer
The 22-year-old is not only kicking butt on stage but off stage too. Peters-Nel helps train women in self-defense moves through a programme she started called Unbreakable. The campaign aims to empower women, both physically and emotionally.
2. She’s survived a hijacking
Peters-Nel was robbed at gunpoint and survived an attempted hijacking in June, shortly after being crowned Miss South Africa. The robbers made off with her cellphone during the incident, which took place in Hyde Park during peak hour traffic. This prompted her to start the Unbreakable campaign.
3. Business degree
The multiple beauty pageant winner holds a degree in business management.
4. Her half-sister inspires her
The new Miss Universe, during an interview question at the pageant, revealed her disabled half-sister inspires her and she is her most significant motivator.
5. Equal work, equal pay proponent
Peters-Nel is a firm believer that everyone should be paid the same, irrespective of sex, for the same job.
