CAPE TOWN – Police say a two-year-old girl has been shot in the mouth and a man has been killed in a shooting in Elsies River, a suburb east of Cape Town which has been the centre of recent gang wars.

According to sources, the girl was shot in the mouth during the incident. The shooting happened on 12th Avenue in Leonsdale, Elsies River, on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said when officers arrived at the scene they found the wounded toddler and the man, 31, who had been killed.

She said no arrests were made.

News24 understands, based on sources with knowledge of the incident, that the shooter was in a white Quantum minibus which sped off after the attack.

It is understood a member of the Bad Boys gang was the target of the shooting. However, this could not be officially confirmed.

This incident is not the first time that a child has been wounded in shootings in Leonsdale this year.

In February two boys, aged 12 and 14, were wounded. During the same month an 11-year-old girl was also reportedly wounded when an alleged gang member used her as a human shield.

Children have been caught in gang-related violence in other areas around Cape Town where gang violence has surged.

On September 9, Aqeel Davids, 9, was caught in apparent gang crossfire in his Ocean View home. He was wounded and later died in hospital.

Barely a month before that, on August 3, a seven-year-old boy, Ezra Daniels, was shot dead in Grassy Park.

Two gangs operate in Elsies River: the Terrible Josters and Bad Boys. The two rival groupings have been fighting over drug turf.

In May, two people were killed and 11 others were wounded in a shooting in Leonsdale.

President Jacob Zuma and other government officials visited Elsies River at the end of May to address the violence.

On October 10, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula announced that he had asked the army to step in to help clamp down on violent crimes in the Western Cape.

It is not yet clear if Zuma will sign off on this.
