CAPE TOWN – The City of Cape Town has recorded 22 injuries during Guy Fawkes celebrations on Sunday.
Fifteen of them occurred at Strandfontein Pavilion.
In one incident, a 10-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after sustaining an eye injury.
At Athlone Stadium, officers confiscated a bakkie-load of illegal fireworks.
The City’s JP Smith said: “We are relieved that Guy Fawkes has come and gone after a fairly busy evening, made all the more challenging by a gusting southeaster. The wind conditions resulted in the early closure of many of the 12 designated sites because of safety considerations as decided by the fire marshals on site.”
The municipality announced on Sunday that the safety and security directorate had finalised its deployment plan for celebrations.
Smith said they had approved 12 designated sites where fireworks could be discharged.
