CAPE TOWN – The recent attacks on Jerome “Donkie” Booysen were apparently “orchestrated and ordered” from inside Pollsmoor Prison.
According to the Weekend Argus, police conducted a raid on the cell of an alleged rival gang leader last Monday.
Booysen was ambushed at Cape Town International Airport two weeks ago.
The name of the alleged gang leader in jail is known, but police refused to comment.
The newspaper says according to a source, five cellphones were found in the cell and contents of the phones link him to the hit on Booysen.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula’s spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said: “Be advised that the provincial commissioner is of the view that it would be premature to do an interview with you now as the investigation process is at a critical stage. Detectives are currently busy investigating some of the issues referred to in your enquiry.”
Booysen, the alleged leader of the Sexy Boys, is still recovering in hospital.
The airport attack was the third attempt on his life this year.
A fourth attempt happened while he was in hospital.
A man dressed as a female doctor planned to inject Booysen with venom but was caught by his bodyguards before the attack could be carried out.
The suspect, Fabian Cupido, 39, who is apparently from Scottsdene, appeared in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court last week on a charge of attempted murder and possession of a stolen car.
Booysen has been moved three times because of safety concerns.
