CAPE TOWN – A farmer was shot dead when four suspects with balaclavas entered his home near Philadelphia in the Western Cape.
It is believed that the shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday.
The owners of the house had a party and reports say that the man, who was later identified as Mark Fagan, died after protecting his family and the party guests.
“He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died due to injuries sustained. Motive unknown. Suspects fled the scene on foot,” said South African Police Services (SAPS).
Rowan Philip, Fagan’s brother-in-law, expressed his heartbreak at the incident.
“Mark gave his own life to save the lives of nine girls and women. It’s unthinkable to consider what would have happened, had he not been able to chase the five armed men out of the house – men who had actually staked out a teenage slumber party and invaded with the full intention of tormenting these children,” Philip told News24.
A murder case is currently being investigated.
