CAPE TOWN – A man accused of murdering his girlfriend’s 18-month-old son in Kensington now also faces a charge of rape.
Ameerudien Peters made his second appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning.
The child’s mother Abigail Ruiters appeared alongside Peters in the dock on charges of murder and child abuse.
Relatives of 18-month-old Jeremiah Ruiters packed the public gallery.
They gasped and cried when they heard a charge of rape has been added to Ameerudien Peters’ charge sheet.
Peters took the boy to the Kensington clinic last Monday for medical treatment where the child was declared dead.
The toddler had sustained serious injuries to his head and body.
The case has been postponed to next month.
Both the accused will remain behind bars.
The child will be laid to rest in Kensington on Saturday
