Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the sixth-generation Polo, a B-segment hatchback competing with players from a diverse range of nationalities including the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris, as such.

The Polo has become the latest VW Group car to employ the flexible MQB AO platform for small cars. Sister-models Audi A1, Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia are also set to receive this floorplan in next-generation forms.

The five-door Polo is now over 4m long and has a 2,564mm wheelbase that’s 94mm more than in the previous model. Along with better interior space for occupants, the boot has grown by 25%, according to its maker.

Volkswagen is offering a wide range of trims for buyers to choose from. The one you see here is R-Line which VW claims is becoming a highly popular option among its clients.

The interior looks tech-savvy…

The Polo has gained the latest in electronics that has already been applied in bigger models like the Golf. The fascia, for one, incorporates digital displays for both the instrument panel and infotainment screen.

Also featuring in the Polo are a host of driver-assist technologies including blind-spot detection, parking assist, active cruise control and automatic braking at city speeds.

There are three types of engines available initially. The first is a natural gas version based on a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol-turbo but is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Other motors available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission include pure petrol 1.0-litre triple developing either 95hp or 115hp and 95hp 1.6-litre diesel-turbo.

Topping off the range is the GTI powered by 200hp 2.0-litre petrol-turbo unit which supersedes the 192hp 1.8-litre variant seen in the predecessor.

Why isn’t VW investing in Thailand yet?

For years, there has been continuous chatter about VW investing in Thailand, particularly in the Ecocar project. But it has never gotten off the ground and is now like a fairy tale. Which is a pity because the Polo has the tech to compete with current Ecocar players, the most advanced one now being the Mazda 2.

But it isn’t game over yet for some Thai fans of VW. In the past, the Polo has generated some interest in the grey market in GTI guise. With a circa-two million baht price, the Polo GTI was a cheaper alternative to the similarly performing Mini Cooper S.
