POLICE RELEASED QUARTERLY CRIME STATS AND THERE IS LITTLE TO SMILE
CAPE TOWN – At least nine people were murdered every day in Cape Town and the trend is on the rise during the first three quarters of the 2016/17 financial year. This also equates to 2481 urders between Apil 1 and December 31,2016 according to the report.
The gloomy preliminary figures, which hav been released by the SAPS, already indicates an increace of 0.7% in the provincial murder rate compared to the previouse year’s stat.
The nationalmurder rate currently stands at 52 people on avaerage per day.
Its the first time since the mid-1990s that the police have pblicly released quarterly crime reports, the institute for security studies (ISS), which had long been advocating for the move, said yesterday.
According to the police documents, entitlked the “crime Situation in SA”, the Western Cape is Fourth deadliest of all provinces after Gauteng, KZN and Eastern Cape.
In Gauteng and KZN, 11 people are murdered on average everyday followed by killings in the Eastern Cape. The rates were calculated per 100 000 population.
